BOSTON DESIGN CENTER ELEVATED
Situated atop the Boston Design Center in the Seaport District, Higher Ground Farm features 2,000 square feet of growing space elevated 100 feet above Boston Harbor, boasting incredible views of the city skyline.

Courtney Hennessey and John Stoddard, Higher Ground's co-founders, came up with the idea in 2011 when they were working together at Toro in Boston. They called Recover to inspect Toro's roof, but decided they needed a larger space to realize their vision. After a year-long tour of Boston's rooftops looking for something big enough, strong enough, and safe enough, they found the perfect fit at the Boston Design Center. The two worked with Recover and Simpson Gumpertz & Heger for another year designing their farm and raising funds before they planted their first seeds in 2013.

With a team of volunteers, Courtney and John stitched together fabric liners for 1,400 milk crates that were filled with CitySoil media, palletized, and craned to the roof with the help of Recover.
