GREEN ROOFS FOR A HEALTHIER COMMUNITY
The Stamford Community Health Center’s green roof creates a vibrant view from fourth-floor conference room windows which previously looked out upon a lackluster black roof membrane. Recover worked with Robert Olson Architects throughout the design development of this retrofit. The existing roof had significant load restrictions which required the use of a custom-blended ultra light soil media and a point-loaded design. Five tree planters, planted with twelve espalier trees – Japanese maples, sawtooth beech, and euonymus – are located above roof columns capable of supporting 900 pounds per square foot. Trees, trellises, planters, and a lush sedum area below the windows insulate the underlying building by reducing the roof’s heat absorption in the summer months. The green roof also reduces heat reflection into the conference room, decreasing air conditioning needs and energy use.

Efficiency was key in the installation of this project as craning and installation could occur only on the weekend when the facility was closed. Over two weekends during the summer solstice, Recover’s field crew worked from sunrise to sunset to convey and place LiveRoof and Hanover pavers, and install all green roof components, including: sedum mats, Tournesol planters, engineered soil media, trees, and trellises. Recover now maintains the roof, providing weeding, irrigation monitoring, and tree pruning and training to facilitate healthy tree growth on wooden trellises.

Stamford Community Health Center is a non-profit with the mission of providing quality health services to those otherwise without access.
