DESIGN-BUILD BY RECOVER
Recover worked with homeowners to design and build a green roof that complements the surrounding landscape while maximizing the minimal square footage of this renovated garage in Brookline, MA. To maximize the growing potential of the roof, the design uses soil grading to create mounds that steadily increase soil depths from 3.5 to 12 inches.
Recover installed the entire green roof system above the waterproof membrane using a ZinCo green roof build-up. Recover increased the system’s water retention capacity by filling the egg-crate shaped drainboard with expanded shale, while a below-grade drip irrigation system reduces the watering needs of the planted perennials, groundcover, grasses, edible crops, and herbs. A custom-built ship’s ladder, handcrafted by Recover’s own boatbuilder, and bluestone pavers allow owners to access the roof in order to harvest mint, basil, peppers, kale, strawberries and more. The carport roof is visually accessible from the client’s living room and bedroom windows, as well as from their front porch and driveway.
