FUNCTIONAL BEAUTY
A peaceful extensive green roof with hardwood decking sits atop this Vineyard home, located on a peninsula between two branches of a brackish pond. The roof adds a sunlit retreat to the building’s living space, in addition to absorbing and slowing rainwater over its footprint.
Sedum grows abundantly without irrigation on this roof, in part due to the plant’s drought-tolerance, as well as the island’s weather patterns and humidity. Yellow flowers bloom in mid-summer, painting the roof with color and attracting pollinators like butterflies and honey bees. This Vineyard Coast project is a great example of using a residential green roof as an extension of a home's livable space.
