CAMPUS MEADOW

The Hursey Center’s 25,000 sq.ft meadow roof was designed to blend into the surrounding campus from afar, and then, as pedestrians draw closer to the building, unfold into a crowning green roofscape on the new state-of the art Center for Advanced Engineering and Health Professions. The green roofs’ stormwater management, pollinator habitat, and oxygen production improves the campus’s green infrastructure and showcases the Hursey Centers’ environmentally-focused curriculum.

Recover Green Roofs worked with Payette Architects, OMNI Ecosystems, and RCSCI to transform the roof into a verdant meadow of marigolds, zinnias, coreopsis, purple coneflower, black-eyed susans, sweet william, flax, wheat, switchgrass, early sunflower, and dense blazing star, to name only a few.

The OMNI Ecosystems comprehensive green roof utilizes a non-mineral based media that mimics the biological, chemical, and physical properties of natural soil.  When the media is completely dry, it can retain up to 47,685 gallons of water (6,375 cf). The system is self-regenerative and each generation of plants supports the next generation of growth, requiring fewer inputs than traditional green roofs and offering better stormwater management, more oxygen production, and sweeter honey.
