INSPIRED GATHERING SPACE
Mad Oyster Studios is an artist live/work space in a refurbished industrial building in Somerville, Mass. This roof garden was designed to enhance an existing roof deck common area that was previously a plain blacktop roof.
Recover provided full design services from schematic design to construction documentation, and installed a diverse semi-intensive rooftop garden. Flowering perennials, drought-tolerant grasses, sedum, and vines on a custom-built trellis complement the existing deck structure. Automated subsurface irrigation ensures plant vigor during warm summer months, allowing the garden to be a refuge for birds, butterflies, and numerous species of bees. The garden also cools this inspiring roof, preserving the life of the waterproofing membrane and providing a welcome retreat for tenants.
